The interlocking stones you see are only the visible part of a much deeper structural system.
To build a paver surface that will not sink or shift, our crew first excavates the soil to the proper depth. Next, we fill the trench with aggregate base rock and compact it thoroughly, after which we lay a smooth bedding layer of sand. We place the individual pavers on top of this foundation. Finally, we sweep jointing sand between the stones to lock the entire field into a single load-bearing surface.
